We helped 1000 Ukranian families

Angelo Conti

Yesterday afternoon, with the delivery of the last 25 aid packages to as many Ukrainian families, Specchio dei tempi concluded one of the projects activated for the refugee emergency: a 500 euro cash aid was delivered to 1000 families, for a total expenditure of half a million euro. In detail, 605 families were helped in Turin, 260 in Novara, 70 in Cuneo, 62 in Alessandria and 3 in Savona. The recipients of the aid were 985 women and 15 men, mainly elderly.  There were 3247 children in these family groups, with an average of 3.2 children. Very large families with up to 9 children were also supported.  The area of origin was in 26% of the cases Mariupol, 22% Odessa, 17% Kiev, 12% Kharkiv. The remaining 23% came from other provinces, almost all in eastern Ukraine.

The project was carried out in close collaboration with the Ukrainian Consulate in Turin and with the consul Dario Arrigotti: a team of Ukrainian volunteers, all long-standing residents in Piedmont, took care of receiving the phone calls for help and of an initial assessment of the requests. The staff of Specchio dei tempi then took care of calling for and delivering the aid, relying in Turin on Casa Santa Luisa in via Nizza 24 and in the provinces on the local editorial offices of La Stampa, which collaborated by providing premises and services.

There were countless expressions of gratitude for this initiative: “It was moving,” explains Specchio’s president, Lodovico Passerin d’Entreves, “to read the messages that these families sent us. Many women had fled their homes holding their children by the hand but without taking anything else with them. This first important cash aid has enabled them to approach an unknown country in a less difficult way. Assistance will obviously continue for emergencies or particularly serious situations”.

Together with the Cooperativa Crescere 1979, Specchio dei tempi has also immediately set up the “Forza Mamme Ucraine!” project, which is accompanying the integration of dozens of families in Turin by means of meetings, Italian courses, knowledge of the city and games for the children.

Finally, the Refugee Village in Cernivci, in the heart of Ukraine, has been set up for a month now by Specchio dei tempi and Specchio d’Italia, with the logistical support of Remar Onlus. where thousands of refugees fleeing bombed cities, but who do not want to leave Ukraine, are welcomed and assisted, seeking shelter in a relatively quieter city.  Here, Specchio has purchased over 1,000 square metres of tensile structures, deployed the Specchiobus with two clinics, guaranteed medical assistance and sends a truckload of food and basic necessities every week.

Specchio dei tempi has so far collected €1,578,472 from 6444 donors for the project “For the people of Ukraine”. The subscription obviously remains open, also because there is still a lot to be done, especially in the Village of Cernivci where we provide a meal to 1300 refugees a day.

Five thousand donations for Ukraine: the collection continues

Angelo Conti

More than 5,000 donations have been made to Specchio dei tempi and Specchio d’Italia for immediate aid to refugees fleeing the bombs. At the same time, the total amount of resources has exceeded 1.1 million euro. Yesterday we also exceeded the quota of 200 families helped with an economic contribution (yesterday alone there were 60 in Novara) and the quota of 600 people transported to Italy by coach and minibus. More than 100 tonnes of goods were transferred from Italy to the borders.

A village in Ukraine to host 1,800 refugees

All activities are underway and these numbers are all set to increase in the coming hours. On the front line, that is, in the war zone, Specchio dei tempi and Specchio d’Italia are active in setting up the “Specchio Village” in Cernivci, 30 kilometres from the Ukrainian border at Siret in Romania. Here we have signed an agreement with the Ukrainian municipality, which has granted us the use of a school (equipped with an air-raid shelter) and made available two squares for the assembly of tensile structures of about 1500 square metres that will house first reception areas, kitchens and clinics to help the refugees.

The village close to Romanian border

All this is possible thanks to the strong agreement with Remar Spain, the non-profit organisation that has been collaborating with Specchio dei tempi for years and that takes care of the logistics of these interventions.

Shuttles and humanitarian aids

Meanwhile, the shuttle service between Italy and the borders continues. Yesterday, a couple of taxi drivers departed from Milan, accompanied by an interpreter, to reach Oradea in Romania with a bus uttles and humanitarian aidloaded with aid and then return with two Ukrainian families.  The coach that left on Tuesday for Medyka in Poland and the 66-seater coach that left on Wednesday from Fossano for Romania are still on their way. A truckload of aid, with a nurse on board, is on its way to Poland.

The collection of foodstuffs, mineral water, pillows, blankets and personal care items continues. In this context, by Sunday Acqua Sant’Anna will supply thousands of bottles, which will be sent to the borders on Monday, while RoverAir will donate thousands of shampoo packs. They will be stored in Fossano, in the warehouse made available by Confartigianato Cuneo, and in Turin to continue towards Cernivci in the first days of next week.

Fundraising for Ukraine exceeds €500,000

Over 505,000 euro raised from 2,215 donors. This is the picture, updated to yesterday evening, of the subscription launched by Specchio dei tempi (with the support of its national brand Specchio d’Italia). Among the curiosities is the accomplishment of the province of Cuneo with over 500 donations.

Support activities for refugee families are intense. Yesterday morning, Specchio distributed economic aid to the first 8 families. This aid can be requested through the filter of the Ukrainian Consulate in Turin on +39 011 0230075.

Last night, a 9-seater minibus that had travelled as far as Lviv, Ukraine, returned to Turin. This was thanks to the courage of an entrepreneur, Massimo Orlando, who offered to drive the vehicle. In the middle of the night, the minibus carrying 54 refugees also arrived, having left Sunday night from the Polish border. The journey was organised in collaboration with Arca Solidale.

All Specchio buses and minibuses leave fully loaded. On board are mainly foodstuffs with a long shelf life, hygiene products, mattresses, cots, pillows, medicines and various medical supplies (with particular demand for syringes, bandages, plasters and disinfectants). There are two main destinations: the village of Korczowa in the Polish province of Javroslaw (one and a half kilometres from the Ukrainian border) and the town of Sivet in northern Romania. Here, Specchio dei tempi is collaborating to set up a second reception camp.
